Global tech corporations, including Alphabet, Meta, Mistral AI, and ASML, have collectively urged the European Commission to postpone the rollout of the AI Act. They argue that the proposed regulations could undermine Europe’s competitiveness in the rapidly evolving artificial intelligence sector.

Thomas Regnier, spokesperson for the European Commission, emphasized the commitment to the timeline, stating, “There is no stop the clock. There is no grace period. There is no pause.” This statement underscores the EU’s resolve to proceed without delay despite external pressures.

Key Provisions and Risk-Based Framework of the EU AI Act

The AI Act introduces a risk-based regulatory framework for AI applications, explicitly prohibiting certain “unacceptable risk” uses such as cognitive behavioral manipulation and social scoring. It categorizes uses like biometrics, facial recognition, and AI in education and employment as “high-risk,” mandating developers to register their systems and comply with stringent risk and quality management requirements to access the EU market.
