This week, Google updated the Gemini app for both Android and iPhone with a refreshed app icon adopting Google’s signature four-color palette: blue, red, yellow, and green. This redesign aligns Gemini visually with Google’s ecosystem, enhancing brand consistency across its products.
Gemini’s New App Icon Reflects Google’s Signature Colors and Design
The redesigned Gemini icon features four rounded points colored in Google’s classic hues, with a predominantly blue right side complemented by red, yellow, and green segments. A subtle gradient near the center-left mirrors the style of Google’s current ‘G’ icon, offering a modern and cohesive aesthetic.
The shapes are now softer and less angular, which improves visibility at smaller sizes such as home screen displays, preventing the icon’s elements from appearing too thin or faded. Additionally, the updated icon occupies more of the circular white background, making it more prominent and visually balanced.
This shift to red, yellow, green, and blue signals Google’s growing confidence in Gemini, integrating it more firmly within its suite of first-party applications. Despite the familiar color scheme, the distinctive sparkle shape ensures it remains uniquely identifiable.
Android Widget Enhancements Accompany Gemini’s Icon Update
Alongside the icon update on Android, Google has improved the Gemini homescreen widget by introducing shortcuts for Video and Screenshare modes, enabling users to launch Gemini Live functionalities directly. These additions are designed to streamline access to key features, particularly in more compact widget sizes.
The revised widget layout is less cluttered, sometimes featuring one fewer shortcut depending on size. At larger dimensions (3×3 and above), users benefit from eight shortcuts, including open app with keyboard activation, voice input, Camera, Gallery, Files, Video, Screenshare, and Live modes. The “Ask Gemini” input field has been simplified to a “Gemini” bar, removing the prior Dynamic Color background to maintain a cleaner interface.
Availability and New Features Across Platforms
As of Friday, the Gemini app version 1.0.776555963 is broadly available on the Google Play Store, while iOS users received version 1.2025.2562103 earlier in the week. Notably, the iOS update introduces the capability to search past conversations, a feature already present on the web version. Users can access this by tapping the chat icon in the top-left corner. This search functionality is currently exclusive to iOS and the web, with no immediate rollout planned for Android.
